The Compelling Why

I just had the privilege to interview two of the most successful gentleman in network marketing for a book I am ghostwriting. Each of these gentlemen, Kody Bateman, founder of Send Out Cards, and Kevin Anderson, founder of Cognigen, left me certain that without a compelling why driving the philosophical engine at a network company success will not be sustainable. Yes, it may be temporarily achieved, but the foundation will eventually crumble. As Kody Bateman so aptly put it, “the crusade must be bigger than the deal”. When we talk about the compelling why behind financial success and prosperity without the side effects of suffering the loss of relationships or health, we must address the ideas that leaders in network marketing base their company’s growth on.

Kevin Anderson said to me, “I decided that no one would ever walk away from Cognigen a victim for the experience. Eliminating fees to join or sustain an agent relationship with us is unheard of. No one loses their money working for Cognigen.” It was this idea of no victims that has led Kevin to not only attract and sustain a successful sales force for Cognigan, but also allowed him to care for a severely disabled autistic daughter in a proactive and loving way. His overwhelming respect and integrity for each individual has made him a remarkable leader.

Kody Bateman told me he failed to act on a prompting he received to say good by to his brother and that three months later his brother was tragically killed in an auto accident. Today, Send Out Cards makes it possible for anyone to act on their intuition or promptings and connect to another person in less than sixty seconds by sending a greeting card.

I am not saying that you need to have a traumatic event in your life to found a company that has vision or purpose greater than making money or getting rich quick. What I am saying is that profound circumstances often lead to remarkable outcomes where the greater good of many people can be served. Corporate philosophies often mean success for people attracted passionately to that business because the leadership has more than their best interest at heart. It is this ability to serve others with their personal vision that ultimately leads to success for both the leadership, and the distributors in these businesses. Here collectively, everyone involved, participates in sharing the energy of an idea that perpetuates every corner of the corporate culture. Success is the inevitable outcome of such sharing.

When I talk to someone wanting to start a home based business, I always inquire about their passions. I have mentioned this in many past newsletters. What do you love to do? Now, I am going to pose a question more insightful in that it addresses why our passions exist. What is your compelling why? Is what you seek an idea bigger than just yourself or your personal agenda? While you may be passionate about telecommunications and finding a network marketing opportunity in the telecommunications industry, why are you driven to do this? This is the compelling why. If your compelling why isn’t bigger than you are, you may find success and a great deal of it, but there will be a price. It can be the loss of time with the ones you love, the loss of your health, or worse.

If you examine your compelling why and find it to be one of service to enrich your family, to build a better community or to change the world your success won’t be at the expense of the things in life that matter. Money is just energy and it follows right intention.

For those of you that think I have really flown off my rocker this newsletter with this piece, just hear me out. Many people call me and many of them have had the same miserable experiences in network marketing: bad uplines, non-existent training, front loading, ever changing compensation plans, etc., and all of them tell that me they have lost money and even worse, lost hope in the industry. When I talk to them about the network marketing company they’ve been working with, I always ask, “what was the compelling why driving this company?” Only in talking the experience out does the picture become clear. This simple question has never been addressed. All of them tell me the compelling why was to make money. No, No, No. Money is what comes out of sharing the compelling why with others.

Secondly, we talk about their compelling why and they tell me the same thing, “I wanted to make a lot of money.” No, No, No. Money is what comes out of sharing your compelling why for the greater good of those you love through the passions that drive you.

In this country, the sad truth is that leadership often doesn’t know any other compelling why than profit at any expense. At the expense of prospects, clients, employees, and even competitors whatever battle has to be waged will be waged if shareholders are served and profit reigns as king. There is nothing wrong with profit. I believe in it, but I don’t feel it has to come at the expense of anyone or anything. When leadership embraces a compelling why that is based on right intention and when you have a personal life driven by a compelling why based on something bigger than your ego the marriage of the two can lead you to fulfillment. Isn’t fulfillment why we are here anyway?

By embracing life and engaging with any company driven by a compelling why you can believe in, you can journey to places you may not know exist yet. These places are within you and they are deeply satisfying. The money that follows is just a natural outcome.

Network Marketing – Scripting for Prospects

Scripting for Prospects

Let me begin by saying that the credit for this section goes entirely to Mary Jean Schmuck and Mary Fields from Send Out Cards. What I love about the following is that the information below is applicable to any network marketing business.

Take note that these ideas are general. As you use them modify them to suit your individual style and personality. That way, you will discover and create the very best way of presenting your opportunity to both potential customers and potential distributors.

“Sometimes is it difficult to find people to join you in your business, I understand that, it takes work and the more work and practice you get, it does get easier and you get better at it,” Mary Fields began. “It’s hard for some to find leaders or interested people. I find it easier to talk to people already in the networking industry, they already know the business.” I’d like to interject here that qualifying your prospects will save you a tremendous amount of time. When you pick up the phone to call find out if they have any interest in your product or your opportunity on the first call. Don’t waste valuable time prospecting and following up with people who will never purchase from you or join your downline. This principle especially applies to people who are not involved in network marketing that you may be prospecting.

“When you have success on a call share that success and be proud of your growth in doing this,” Mary went on. “It doesn’t become fun. Don’t worry if someone hangs up on you or maybe isn’t so pleasant, that was just the last call, move to the next one. You won’t get very many of those.”

“What I do is search in any search engine and there are many, for leaders, who have their own website. For example, go to www.google.com and put in any MLM company name or you can find a lot of other search engines to search for MLM distributors at http://www.cyndislist.com/search.htm#Popular for one,” Mary continued.

“Then go and search through the links to try and find some of that company’s distributors, and find some with their own sites, and look for the phone number and email. It might be hidden under Contact Us, just keep searching until you find some sites that have this information. If the address isn’t there you can get it from a reverse search of their phone number at www.411.com or www.mybc.com or www.superpages.com.

I will then typically collect a number of these leads before making my calls. I then start calling and making notes right under their info. It is surprising what may happen. Maybe you will try a few of them and find that that none of them are doing well. Just be confident that you have an awesome opportunity to share. Make notes and follow up. Here is a general script.” Mary concluded.

“Intro: Hi,________, I am________. I am calling from State or Country and I notice that you have a home business. I have been looking at your website. Compliment them on the site if you want or make a comment and just go on. You might want to ask if they are fee to speak. Be respectful.

Questions:

Are you still working with (Company)?

I was wondering how your business is going? Don’t respond to their opportunity. If they say they are doing great then say that is why I am calling. I have an additional opportunity you may be interested in. Remember, you are not necessarily looking for another opportunity for yourself when beginning a relationship. Getting involved in their business will not make your proposition any easier and it really might show that you are not solid in your opportunity.

If you get negatives like they aren’t working very much with it, then say, “Well, that is one of the reasons I am calling.” We are looking for people who found it hard to do network marketing, to show them how it can be much easier. Or, if they are successful, then say you are looking for leaders to work with and they might have a match with your opportunity.

You want to peak interest. The bottom line is this. You want them to accept information on your opportunity, sample the product etc and allow you to follow up with them. Make sure you verify the email address and physical mailing address at this point in time as you will be sending information to them immediately. Determine the time that works for them for your next call and schedule it.

If they say that they are not interested, then say that’s OK. I can just send you the info if you like and you can hang on to it for later. It is definitely worth a look and you might know someone who would be interested. Let them know you are not a get rich quick scheme and that there is no obligation. There is an old rule that people can’t say no more than three times, so continue to try in a friendly, respectful way. Sometimes, people just say no because they are so bombarded with offers, and so plagued by telemarketers that they don’t know what they are missing. Telling you will send info via mail or email gives people a chance to examine the opportunity without having it forced down their throats.

Maybe, you will have to ask more questions to engage them to start asking you questions or show interest.

Have you been with Company Name very long? Listen to their story and then start asking questions that they may have positive answers for such as, “How do you find your customers? Does it take a lot of time and effort to find your customers? Is it easy for you to find your customers? Do you find most of your distributors can’t find customers or that it is difficult to share the products or explain to customers why they need the product? Do you already have people enrolled in your business and is it growing? Is your group recruiting and finding customers? How are you marketing your business?’

The success will lie in your ongoing follow up. Even if they seem successful and sometimes they are not, you will find that once they show interest in your business, their statements of how they have no interest in your business will diminish. They may even start knocking their own company, once they quit trying to convince you that they are doing great. And, the possibility exists that you might just land a good successful networker that will be interested. Not everyone will buy, but the law of sales lies in the number of calls you make.”

Mary guarantees that if you find one networker and call them first and then email or mail them information and then follow up and possibly do a three way if you need help, that you will succeed.

Mary Fields is a successful network marketer from Canada who five years ago did the above process she is describing and grew her business from 1,200 customers to 86,000 customers. She can be reached at 250-729-9866 or 2-866-273-9960 or mary.fields@shaw.ca.

Review of the month

MXI Corporation

MXI Corporation brings a new paradigm to chocolate. The new product line called Xocai (show-sigh) offers antioxidant full, guilt free healthy chocolate.

Entrepreneur magazine’s December issues lists chocolate in there Hot List of best businesses to start and say chocolate is “the new coffee”. They also mention the press that chocolate has received lately about its health benefits as well as how consumption of dark chocolate increased 40% in 2006.

Brief history of the company

The Founders of MXI Corp have dedicated the last 25 years of their lives in developing and marketing health-food products for the active and healthy lifestyle. These products have focused on the current diet trends whether it be low-calorie, sugar-free, high-protein, low-fat, high-fiber, or low-carbohydrate. MXI Corporation (formed about 18 months ago) is now dedicated to the fastest growing trend in diet and nutrition: high-antioxidant cacao and superfruits!

Before MXI Corp, they founded Pure De-lite™ Products, Inc., which was recognized as one of the leading distributors of low-carb, sugar-free products in the United States. Pure De-lite™ chocolates have achieved top honors and accolades from companies such as the American Culinary Institute, CNN, and Health & Fitness as “The Best Low-Carb, Sugar-Free Chocolates” in the marketplace.

What is so special about MXI Corporation?

First of all its about truly healthy chocolate. Many manufacturers lower the sugar level and call it healthy. MXI has taken chocolate to a whole new level combining it with superfruits along with cold processing that maintains all the nutrients. Dr. Fitzer of Brunswick Labs (the leader in antioxidant testing of nutritional products) at the antioxidant conference in Florida stated that Xocai is the most nutritional beverage on the market.

Xoçai™ is the perfect delivery system for the potent antioxidants in dark chocolate. For example one of our nuggets has the same antioxidants as over a half pound of raw spinach. The processed chocolate found in candy is laden with fat, wax, fillers, and sugar. In addition traditional processing methods destroy most of its antioxidant capacity.

Xoçai™ products combine cacao (chocolate) and the açai (ah-sigh-ee) berry from the Amazon Rain Forest. These are the top two antioxidant rich foods in the world as tested by Brunswick Labs. The acai berry has 7 times the antioxidants of blueberries and over 14 times the antioxidants of raw spinach. Unprocessed coca powder has over 10 times the antioxidants than blueberries and over 17 times the antioxidants as raw spinach. Xocai Products contain completely natural, UNPROCESSED chocolate which retains 100% of its antioxidant and nutritional value! These two foods together provide a powerful free-radical fighting punch.

Each of our products proudly displays the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity). ORAC was determined by the U.S.D.A. as a way to measure the antioxidant potency of food and therefore the capacity of a food to absorb free radicals. Free radicals are known to cause many health problems such as heart disease, macular degeneration, diabetes and cancer. Most health professions would agree that everyone’s health can benefit from increasing the intake of antioxidants.

No caffeine is found in our healthy chocolate. Contrary to the popular belief that chocolate contains caffeine, it is added to traditional chocolate products. Xocai is suitable for Vegetarians and Vegans and is considered a “Clean Product”. Diabetics can eat Xocai and receive the health benefits of helping balance blood sugar levels.

How does it work?

MXI delivers these products to market through its budding network of independent relationship-marketing distributors. This is a people to people business utilizing the power of Network Marketing. People like you and me register to become distributors and essentially become independent representatives of the company.

What is the role of an Independent Distributor?

The roll of the distributor is to share the good news about healthy chocolate. Distributors can sell products directly at retail or refer customers and potential distributors to their company provided web site.

Compensation plan

The compensation plan is thoroughly explained on the web site listed below. Here is a brief overview. As a distributor there are 7 ways to earn income. These include retail, quick check bonus upon sign up of new distributors, infinity bonus based on group volume, associate development bonus, business expansion centers, executive generation bonuses (that pay up to 7 levels deep with unlimited width) and leadership bonuses.

Search Engine Optimization

Some Top Tens for SEO

This article was submitted by Jeffrey Staub of Virante, Inc.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a critical issue to consider when developing a website. SEO is also crucial to institute for existing sites which may not be in full compliance with the latest observations and techniques. By definition the goal of SEO is to make your site as visible to the search engine providers (Google, Yahoo!, MSN, etc.) as possible. Here are a few of the major issues to consider when contemplating SEO:

  1. Most effective title and meta tags
  2. Keyword research and discovery
  3. Content creation.
  4. Keyword density
  5. Alt/title tags for images and text links
  6. Proper inner site linking
  7. Proper sitemap creation and implementation (sitemaps.org)
  8. Offsite linking
  9. URL structure
  10. Web page and image naming
  11. Effective code usage/structure

If you are looking to learn more about SEO on your own here is a top ten list of resources I recommend looking into and becoming a member, subscribe to the blog, and/or receiving newsletters from:
